Who we are and what we do
The Brazilian Center for Research in Physics (CBPF) is an institute of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil. Located in the Urca neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, CBPF develops activities in basic science, technology research and promotion of science to the general public. Its scientific production is one of the largest in the country: with about 70 researchers, the institution produces, on average, 300 scientific articles annually, published in the top refereed journals in physics. In 2013, CBPF was ranked by Scimago, the science evaluation resource that assesses universities and research-focused institutions worldwide, as the number one Brazilian institution in quality research and international collaboration. CBPF’s graduate program, in existence for over 50 years, is ranked with the highest score by Brazil’s Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education (CAPES). The more than 100 masters and doctoral students are distributed among the various experimental and theoretical areas taught, and hundreds of former graduates are currently working in numerous educational and research institutions throughout Brazil. CBPF hosts Labnano (Laboratory for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology), and is one of the most well equipped experimental centers in the country, with various multi-user laboratories, open to the community. CBPF also has a Professional Masters Degree program aimed at producing highly qualified personnel to work in industry and in any professional endeavors that need advanced technological solutions. This program has already resulted in several requests for patents by students and researchers. The institution has a strong social outreach, hosting various programs geared toward students and teachers from public schools. Each year, more than 1,000 students and teachers visit CBPF to attend lectures, conduct experiments in modern physics, and become acquainted with its laboratories and research groups.
