In statistical mechanics, the critical behavior near a second order phase transition is described by the critical exponents. Materials that exhibit the same critical exponents belong to the same universality class, which is usually determined by the symmetry of the system.
It will be demonstrated that the notion of universality class also manifests in topological phase transitions, which are quantum phase transitions that change the topological properties of the wave functions in solids. Through investigating the jump of topological invariant, the correlation functions, and the change of energy dispersion, the influence of dimensionality and symmetry on the critical behavior near topological phase transitions will be clarified.
